A patch release is an update to a released compiler product that includes modified or
new files to address specific issues or improvements.
It is not a complete product but rather a set of changes that modify an existing installation.
The changes between the baseline software and the patch are documented in the respective patch release note.
For example, the TriCore v6.3r1 patch 9 release note covers the changes between v6.3r1 and v6.3r1 patch 9
of the TASKING VX-toolset for TriCore. The baseline software refers to
the original version of the product before applying any updates or
patches.
A patch is not a complete product. Since it
includes only updated files, it is applied to an existing installation
of the product. So, you should always have the baseline software installed first, before installing the patch.
Always install a patch in the directory where the baseline software is installed. For example, if you need to install patch 9 of the TriCore VX-toolset, ensure you select the directory where the TriCore VX-toolset is installed, as the destination directory. Refer to Install/uninstall a patch topic for detailed steps.
You can install multiple patches on your system; however, the baseline software should be installed separately if you want to have a separate instance for each patch.
For
example, if you need to install patch 8 (TriCore v6.3r1p8) and patch 9
(TriCore v6.3r1p9) of the TriCore VX-toolset v6.3r1 separately, ensure that you
have the baseline TriCore VX-toolset v6.3r1 installed separately for each
patch. Refer to Install multiple patch levels next to each other on one machine topic for detailed steps.
The latest patch contains new fixes plus all fixes from previous patches, so you do not need to install earlier patches individually. That is, if you install patch 4 of a product, it contains all the previous patches 1, 2, and 3.
Although a previous patch is already installed, it is advised to have a clean base installation and then install the latest patch.
